Emotional intelligence - Need or a want?

🌟 Emotional Intelligence: A Necessity or a Luxury? 🌟

This was the intriguing question that kicked off my recent conversation with Kartic Vaidyanathan. Emotional intelligence is becoming increasingly crucial in both the corporate world and our personal lives.

Kartic, an IIT and IIM alumnus, a guest faculty at IIT Madras, and a former Director of Learning & Development at Cognizant, is currently the founder of LetsPlayToLearn – an initiative that makes learning simple, fun, and enjoyable through games and activities 🎲. I was really impressed with his game-based learning approach to teach various essential topics. While there are multiple ways to teach a subject, experiential learning through games has a greater positive impact. Our discussion delved into self-awareness, drawing insights from the Bhagavad Gita and numerous research studies, making it a rich and enlightening experience.

Our conversations on self-awareness brought us back to the topic of emotional intelligence. In my opinion, the crux of emotional intelligence lies in three things:

- Being aware of our own emotions

- Using the right words/means to express them effectively

- Understanding others' emotions to respond appropriately

These skills are essential for success in today's world, and developing them early is key. A big thanks to Kartic for taking the time to meet during my short visit to Chennai and making it an enlightening evening on our quest to empower the leaders of tomorrow. 🌟

Cut to previous week, the following piece from the Economic Times only reiterated my belief on this topic. This is an interview excerpt from Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, where he highlighted the importance of showing emotions at work, stating, "All of your emotions are sort of an early-warning system." Bezos explained that stress often signals something we need to address, and that channeling negative emotions like anger and frustration isn't productive. More importantly, he talks about how he believed that anger was the only negative emotion allowed, but now he has started to see the value in expressing feelings such as sadness, fear, and anxiety – both in professional and personal settings.

To the younger generation reading this – your time to cultivate emotional intelligence is NOW ! It does not need to wait. You have an entire generation of people who have been there and done that whom you can lean on. And that’s precisely why people like Kartic and I are here to help on – making a positive impact through our coaching and training programs for teens and young adults. It's also heartening to see parents recognizing the importance of emotional intelligence, as evidenced by my coaching conversations with students and their parents.

Let's continue to foster emotional intelligence in ourselves and others! 🌱
